This is a three storey block of twenty-six units. This provides the best outlook and privacy for each unit.
Architecturally however the challenge was how to make this structure visually compatible with its beach front environment.
This was resolved by cutting the twenty-six unit block in half and giving each half its own distinct roof. The separation into two buildings also created a central access route to the pool and beach beyond through the existing palm grove.
The roof shape is a key element in creating the right scale of the buildings. The large sheltering pitched roof is the generic feature of all (sub)tropical Pacific traditional architecture, regardless of which culture. The roof shape varies per region and culture.
The chosen concept is a contemporary interpretation of these qualities rather than an effort to replicate historical and traditional architecture. The slightly convex shape of the roof adds a sculptural quality to the two building parts that both unites and separates them.
